Product overview

The ERICHSEN 232 Grindometer, also known as a Hegman gauge, is made from a block of specially treated hardened steel with two wedge-shaped grooves cut into its surface, of uniform depth and stable dimensions. The two grooves can be compared with each other, making it easy to take an average. One side of the gauge shows groove depth in micrometres (µm), the other in Hegman (HS) units. Other units can be engraved to order (at extra cost); please specify when ordering. The table below shows the conversions between the most common fineness units:

The gauge comes in 4 ranges: 0–15, 0–25, 0–50 and 0–100 µm. A scraper is included as standard.

Applications

The ERICHSEN 232 Grindometer is mainly used for testing coatings and paints.

Test principle

The ERICHSEN 232 Grindometer draws the test material down into a wedge-shaped film. By eye, find where particles in the material are larger than the depth of the wedge; read the groove depth at the boundary between the smooth and the uneven surface. That value is the fineness of grind of the material.

How to use it: pour enough test material into the deep end of the grooves, taking care not to create bubbles. Hold the scraper perpendicular to the gauge and draw the material smoothly towards the shallow end in about 1–2 seconds. Assess within 3 seconds of drawing down. View at right angles to the grooves, at an angle of about 20–30°, and find where particles cluster or streaks appear. The groove depth at that point is the fineness of the material.
