The TABER® Rotary Platform Abraser 1700/1750 is commonly known as the Taber Abraser. First introduced in 1930, this precision instrument is used for accelerated wear testing. It can produce in minutes wear data that would take years of real use, and it quickly became the world standard for evaluating abrasion resistance.

Since its introduction, the Taber Abraser has been used for quality and process control, research and development, and material evaluation, and is widely used in materials testing. It is cited in many standards and specifications covering plastics, coatings, leather, paper, ceramics, carpet, safety glass and more.

Description

The Taber test works as follows. A flat 100 mm square or round specimen is mounted on a turntable platform that rotates at a fixed speed. Specimens are up to 6.35 mm thick (materials thicker than 6.35 mm but under 40 mm can be tested with an optional accessory). Two genuine TABER abrading wheels are lowered onto the specimen surface at a specified load.

Taber test diagram

As the turntable rotates, the specimen drives the wheels in opposite directions about an axis tangent to the specimen: one wheel rubs outwards and the other inwards. A vacuum system removes the loose debris at the same time. The wheels abrade a complete ring on the specimen surface, revealing abrasion resistance at all angles relative to the weave or grain of the material. The abraded ring covers about 30 cm².

Each turntable has two precisely balanced abrading arms that can be raised independently to mount or inspect specimens. Each arm is balanced to apply a load of 250 g, excluding the weight of the wheel. Auxiliary weights increase the load to 500 or 1000 g, and counterweights can reduce it (with 50, 125, 150 or 175 g weights).

Features of the Taber 5135 and 5155:

  • Specimen rotation speed selectable at 60 or 72 rpm.
  • Simple user interface with touch-key operation and an LCD digital display. Test parameters can be changed through on-screen menus, and settings are stored internally.
  • Vacuum system included. The suction nozzle height is adjustable for specimens of different thickness.
  • Polished stainless steel weights give standard loads of 500 or 1000 g. The weights actually weigh 250 or 750 g and are marked with the load, which includes the weight of the abrading arm (250 g).
  • Quick-release mounting hubs let wheels be fitted quickly without lock nuts.
  • Aluminium housing.

Models

The Taber® Abraser comes in two models, single or dual platform. Both share the same durable design and can be used interchangeably.

TABER® Abraser – 1700 (115/230 V; 60/50 Hz)

The 1700 has a single platform.

TABER® Abraser – 1750 (115/230 V; 60/50 Hz)

The 1750 has two test platforms, so two specimens can be tested at once (two different specimens, or the same specimen for comparison). Each platform is run by its own keys.
