The TABER® Multi-Finger Scratch/Mar Tester 710 measures the scratch and mar resistance of materials. It is the basis of the instrument described in many automotive test standards, usually called a five-finger scratch tester, and is commonly used for testing plastics.

Description

The tester is driven by compressed air. The test platform moves horizontally and is operated with a control knob, for single or multiple strokes. An electronic timer displays the test speed, which is adjusted by raising or lowering the air pressure.

A crossbeam supports five independent spline shafts, which apply a constant vertical load to the scratch tips. A handle on the crossbeam raises and lowers the shafts, and five plastic support rods can hold one or more shafts clear so that they do not touch the sample during a test.

Separate weights fit on top of each spline shaft to apply standard loads. Weights of 2 N, 3 N, 4 N, 5 N, 6 N, 7 N, 10 N, 15 N and 20 N are supplied.

Optional weights of 4 N, 8 N, 9 N, 12 N or 8 N, 13 N, 18 N, 25 N, and a 0.6 N precision weight, are also available.

Flat samples up to 22 mm thick can be tested, as can slightly curved samples. A clamp at one end of the sample table holds the sample; curved samples can be held with two clamps. An optional 5 mm spacer raises the crossbeam for samples thicker than 22 mm.

Scratch tips

One set of 1.0 mm diameter tips and one set of 7.0 mm diameter tips are supplied, made of tungsten carbide. Optional tips include tungsten carbide conical tips of 0.1 mm, 0.25 mm, 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm, and diamond tips of 90° with a 3 mil or 3.5 mil tip radius.
