Features
Simple, economical cupping tester for painted or powder-coated metal panels up to 1.25 mm thick.
Application
The Model 200 is used for the Erichsen cupping test and complies with the following standards:
DIN ISO 1520 ISO 1520 BS 3900 : Part E4
NFT 30-019 SIS 18 41 77
A metal panel 70–90 mm wide, up to 1.25 mm thick and with a tensile strength of 400 N/mm2, coated with paint or another coating, is drawn into a die by a spherical punch. The material is stretched until the coating cracks or flakes off. The depth of draw at which the coating cracks is a quality indicator for the paint or coating material and relates to its elongation and adhesion properties.
This simple, manually operated tester is particularly suitable for quality control of varnishes, paints, plastic coatings and enamels.
Overview
The Erichsen Model 200 Cupping Tester is a bench-top unit with a cast-iron body and a cylindrical test head. To carry out a cupping test, insert the panel through the opening into the test head, coated side up. Turn the handwheel clockwise to clamp the panel. Pull the locking pin out of the fixed sleeve and turn the test head clockwise to start the drawing test. The test ends when the coating cracks. The depth can be read directly from the digital counter. Throughout the test, looking down into the die holder lets you watch cracks forming in the coating. For more precise visual observation of coating failure during the test, a special microscope with a battery-powered light can be used.
