Product
Motorised Cupping Tester 202 EM: motor driven, test head open at the side, test tools to DIN EN ISO 1520, with a connection for microscope lighting, digital display of the cupping value and a presettable cupping value. Operated by touch screen.
Application
Simple to operate, the instrument measures the extensibility and adhesion of protective and other coatings quickly and accurately with the ERICHSEN cupping test.
ERICHSEN cupping test
Standards
DIN EN ISO 1520, BS 3900 : Part E4, NF T 30-019, SIS 18 41 77
Substrates up to 1.5 mm thick can be tested.
The ERICHSEN cupping test gives valuable information on whether a coating is suitable for its application. A low cupping value means the coated product may not withstand deformation stress, leaving the substrate open to corrosion.
The 202 EM is powerful and offers a wide range of optional accessories. It is a useful quality-control tool for both paint manufacturers and paint users.
How it works
The 202 EM is a bench-top unit with a steel housing that holds the test cylinder and the control panel.
The coated panel is placed in the opening of the test cylinder, coated side up. The test head is open at the side, so large panels also fit. The panel is clamped automatically by a separate piston.
The instrument is operated by touch screen. The menu settings are password-protected against unauthorised changes (to the programs, for example).
Test parameters such as test speed (2–60 mm/min) or punch travel can be entered before the test starts.
Microscopes for observing the test
Neither microscope can be retrofitted; it must be ordered together with the main unit.
A microscope is used to watch the test area and identify the moment the coating cracks. A microscope with lighting is recommended. The test surface is lit and the microscope focused before the test starts. During the test the microscope holder moves in step with the test piston, so the microscope never needs refocusing.
Digital microscope 456-USB (optional)
The high-resolution 456-USB digital microscope has a built-in light source (8× magnification, adjustable white LEDs) and connects to a PC or laptop. Digitised images make observation easier and let you archive pictures of the cracked samples after testing.
The digital microscope has a 2-megapixel CMOS sensor and a precision measuring scale. It is ideal for taking photos directly, live viewing and recording video of the test.
A ring adapter is needed to attach the digital microscope to the main unit. The adapter is held on the unit by four strong magnets.
