Features
Quick, simple measurement of fluid viscosity.
Application
An important instrument for quick, simple viscosity measurement in the laboratory and in production. It is highly accurate for Newtonian liquids and suits low- to medium-viscosity fluids, but not high-viscosity substances such as pastes.
Design
The flow cup consists of an upper cup cavity and an orifice at the bottom. Excess fluid runs into a collecting channel round the top rim of the cavity. The cup body is normally made of anodised aluminium and the orifice of stainless steel. Only the low-cost 243/I cup has a phenolic resin body, still with a stainless steel orifice.
Measuring principle
Viscosity is calculated from the time (in seconds) a precisely controlled volume of fluid takes to flow out of the cup's orifice.
Measuring procedure
- Level the stand with the spirit level
- Place the flow cup in the test stand or a thermostatic bath
- Close the orifice
- Fill with fluid
- Draw a glass plate across the rim of the cup to scrape off excess fluid, and leave the plate covering the cup
- Open the orifice
- Slide the glass plate off horizontally and start the stopwatch at the same moment
- Stop the stopwatch when the stream first breaks, and record the time.
Full details are given in each standard. Keep strictly to the specified temperature range: even small differences cause considerable changes and measurement errors.
Care and maintenance
Clean the flow cup thoroughly after each measurement, especially the orifice. Never use hard or sharp objects that could scratch the orifice or the inside of the cup. Residue left on the orifice, or scratches, directly affect the results.

Accessory: tripod test stand for all cup types, with glass plate and spirit level
