The ERICHSEN 301 Viscosity Paddle is a tool for quickly checking whether a paint or coating has the right viscosity for spraying or brushing on site. It is both a stirrer for thinning paint and a tool for keeping it at working viscosity in real time. Made of corrosion-resistant spring steel, the paddle has two test areas – two slots, a narrow one for spraying viscosity and a wide one for brushing – each with a round hole at either end. The design is simple and practical, easy to use and to clean.

Applications

The ERICHSEN 301 is mainly used to measure the viscosity of Newtonian liquids – in the coatings industry, mainly liquid paints and coatings. It is not suitable for high-viscosity pastes.

Test principle

The 301 Viscosity Paddle is equivalent to a capillary viscometer projected onto a flat plane: the slots act as capillaries and the holes at either end as timing bulbs of different diameters. The flow rate in a slot depends on its width and on the liquid's viscosity and density. So the 301 works like a capillary viscometer: the result is the time, in seconds, a set amount of liquid takes to flow from one end of the test area to the other at a given temperature. Results can be converted to the DIN 4 mm flow cup: the flow time in the narrow slot is about one fifth of the DIN 4 cup time, and in the wide slot the ratio is 1:12. Finally, the corresponding standard formulas convert them to kinematic viscosity in centistokes (mm²/s).

How to use it: choose the slot for spraying or brushing (narrow or wide, clearly marked on the paddle). Dip the paddle into the test liquid (the slot fully immersed, with the upper hole kept in the air), then lift it out quickly and hold it vertical. Watch the liquid run from the top of the slot to the bottom; take the reading when it reaches the lower hole.
