Features
Tests the bending resistance (flexibility and adhesion) of coatings on metal panels to EN ISO 1519, EN 13523-7 and ASTM D 522.
The ERICHSEN 266 S Cylindrical Mandrel Bend Tester uses the standard method for testing the flexibility and adhesion of a coating under bending stress. Its base is made of painted steel; the instrument is compact, sturdy and suited to bench use.
It comes as standard with 14 cylindrical mandrels of different diameters (2–32 mm; the 2, 3 and 4 mm mandrels are made from steel sheet) for the user to choose from. The three rotating pressure rollers, parallel to the mandrel axis, are made of rigid PVC: very sturdy, durable and light. The whole instrument is supplied in a strong plastic case.
Compared with the earlier Model 266, the test width has increased from 45 mm to 100 mm, giving a larger area for inspecting results and more accurate tests.
Technical data
Dimensions: 350 × 170 × 115 mm (L × W × H)
Net weight: main unit approx. 6 kg, mandrels approx. 3 kg
Panel thickness: 0.3 mm or 1 mm (1 mm panels can only be tested on the 2, 3 and 4 mm mandrels)
Panel width: panels up to 100 mm wide
Mandrels: 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 13 / 16 / 19 / 20 / 25 / 32 mm

Applications
The ERICHSEN 266 S is mainly used to determine the bending resistance (flexibility and adhesion) of paints and coatings applied to metal panels.
Standards:
EN ISO 1519
EN 13523-7
ASTM D 522
Test principle
The 266 S relies on the fact that metals (mainly steel) withstand bending better than coatings. After the coating has been applied to a metal panel and cured, the panel is bent to find the largest mandrel diameter at which the coating cracks or breaks.
Test procedure:
v Return the bending handle to its start position (to the left, as shown); this opens the mandrel slot.
v Place the required mandrel in the slot (for QC tests there will be a specified size, for example whether the coating cracks over a 10 mm mandrel).
v Adjust the panel holder to the right position (loosen the locking screw to slide it back and forth; it is usually moved directly below the mandrel, with the exact position depending on panel thickness), then loosen the panel clamp.
v Insert the test panel between the rollers and the mandrel into the clamp; lock it in place, adjusting it so that it sits tight against the mandrel.
v Adjust the bending handle towards the panel (turn the handle to move it closer to or away from the panel).
v To test, hold the grip firmly with your left hand and pull the bending handle up with your right until it reaches its stop on the right-hand side. This bends the panel round the chosen mandrel. Bend in one smooth movement taking about 1–2 seconds.
