ERICHSEN 475 Density Sphere (density tester), Germany

Product overview

The ERICHSEN 475 Density Sphere is aimage.png

sphere-type density tester consisting of a stainless steel sphere (10 or 100 ml at 20 °C) and a sturdy hanger. It measures the density of paints, coatings and other non-paste liquids quickly. It can be used with a standard stand or with a bench stand with a swivel arm (see right).

The 475 comes in four models:

Ø  475/I, volume 100 ml ± 0.1% (20 °C)

Ø  475/II, as 475/I, with official certificate issued by the weights and measures authority

Ø  475/III, volume 10 ml ± 0.1% (20 °C)

Ø  475/IV, as 475/III, with official certificate issued by the weights and measures authority

Tests can be carried out to these standards:

DIN 53 217, Part 2

ISO 2811, Part 2

VDA 621-113

Applications

The ERICHSEN 475 Density Sphere is mainly used to measure the density of paints, coatings and other non-paste liquids.

Test principle

A body immersed in a liquid experiences an upward force (buoyancy); from this force and the body's volume, the density of the liquid can be calculated. The density ρ of the sample at the standard test temperature t, in g/ml, is given by:

ρ = (W1 − W2)/V + ρL

W1: weight of the beaker with sample before the sphere is immersed, g

W2: weight shown on the balance after the sphere is immersed, g

V: volume of the sphere when immersed to the middle of the hanger neck, ml

ρL: density of air = 0.0012 g/ml

Test procedure

Fill a graduated glass beaker, large enough for the sphere to be immersed to the middle of the hanger neck, with the sample. Use a temperature-controlled cabinet or water bath to bring the sphere and sample to 20 ± 0.5 °C. Then place the beaker with the sample on a laboratory balance, and clamp the sphere's hanger to the stand so that the sphere can move up and down easily.

For the 475/I, the beaker and liquid must be weighed to ± 10 mg; for the 475/III to ± 1 mg. With the beaker and sample left on the balance, lower the sphere slowly into the liquid by hand until the hanger neck is immersed to its middle, and weigh again.
