ERICHSEN 288/358/360/411/421 Film Applicators (Germany)
Product overview
The ERICHSEN 288 / 358 / 360 / 411 / 421 series manual film applicators are all made of corrosion-resistant steel, built to fine German manufacturing standards to meet demanding film application requirements.

The series includes different types to choose from – the blade-type 288, 360, 411 and 421, and the wire-bar 358 – all of which give a quick way of producing coating films.
Applications
The ERICHSEN 288 / 358 / 360 / 411 / 421 applicators can be used by hand, or fitted to a motorised film applicator (ERICHSEN 409 or 510) for quality control of films and continuous monitoring of film quality in production. They are simple to use and offer a wide choice.
The 358 is mainly used on charts, plastic films, leather, textiles and other flexible materials. Their surfaces are often uneven or have raised areas, so ordinary blade applicators give coatings of uneven thickness; the 358 wire-bar applicator solves this. As the applicator is drawn over the substrate by hand, it presses the substrate flat, and the grooves formed by the wire winding produce a film of specified thickness (see right). The theoretical film thickness is set by the gaps in the winding.

The 421, known as a step applicator, can draw up to 10 films of different thickness at once for R&D and comparison – a very fast film application tool.

The special feature of the 411 is that any film thickness from 0 to 1000 µm can be set with its micrometer screws, making it the ideal applicator for detailed development work.

Test principle
The ERICHSEN 288 / 358 / 360 / 411 / 421 applicators work by setting a gap height. As the applicator is drawn slowly along, liquid coating flows out through the gap and forms a wet film of the set thickness.
However, because of the material's flow and the drawing speed, the film is subject to shear, so the actual film is thinner than the theoretical value (generally 60–70% of the theoretical thickness; after drying, the film shrinks and the dry film is about 40–50% of the actual wet film). This is typical of blade and gap applicators; the wire-bar 358 is not limited in this way. ERICHSEN uses precision machining to eliminate these effects and improve the precision of the wire bars – at present only the 358 wire bar achieves this accuracy.
