ERICHSEN 510 Automatic Film Applicator (Germany)

Product overview

The ERICHSEN 510 Coatmaster, an enhanced upgrade of the 509 Coatmaster, is a compact, sturdy instrument with a simple keypad. It is an automatic film applicator, a drying time tester and recorder, and a microprocessor-controlled precision traversing platform for coating tests. The 510 offers a very wide choice of optional accessories and tools, and takes on different functions depending on what is fitted.

Fitted with a manual film applicator (such as the ERICHSEN 288 / 358 / 360 / 411 / 421, or the 419 Levelling and Sagging Tester used as an applicator), its steady, speed-adjustable carriage produces whatever films the user needs, avoiding the inaccuracy of drawing films by hand.

Drying time test tools:

* Test tool 1: for assessing surface drying time (woollen thread laid on the wet film, no pressure)

image.pngimage.png

* Test tool 2: for determining tack-free time (woollen thread pressed into the film)

image.pngimage.png

* Test tool 3: for assessing surface drying time to DIN 53 150 (ballotini)

image.pngimage.png

* Test tool 4: for assessing dust-dry time (roller)

image.pngimage.png

* Test tool 5: for assessing surface drying time and the relation between surface drying and through-drying (ball)

image.pngimage.png

* Test tool 6: for assessing surface drying time and the relation between surface drying and through-drying (coil)

image.pngimage.png

* Test tool 7: for determining the drying time of printing inks (toothed wheel)

Note: the 7 test tools above need the appropriate holder for drying time tests.

Scratch hardness attachment:

For scratch hardness tests. The attachment holds an ERICHSEN 318 or 435 scratch tester; with the 510's constant-speed platform it produces perfect scratch test results, free of operator influence.

Applications

The key feature of the ERICHSEN 510 Coatmaster is its microprocessor-controlled stepper motor, which lets the carriage push all kinds of tools at a very steady speed. This makes it ideal for:

* covering a surface completely with an absolutely uniform film

* providing reliable information on the relation between wet and dry film thickness

* drawing several films at once – of the same thickness in different colours or materials, or of the same sample in different thicknesses

* preparing many identical films

Typical users for film application: the paint and coatings industry (especially R&D and quality control), and high-precision laboratories at universities and research institutes (for example in solar cells, fuel cells, batteries or LCD displays, and in medical technology and research).

Typical users for drying tests: parallel drying tests let the drying behaviour of different coatings be compared, making this a very useful development tool for the paint and coatings industry, especially for research, development and quality control across many different products.

Test principle

In principle, the ERICHSEN 510 simply drives a stepper motor that moves the carriage back and forth. Thanks to the stepper motor's precision, the stroke and speed of application can be controlled exactly, producing a standard wet film.

For drying time tests, the test tool is drawn through the wet film at a preset speed, and the different drying stages are identified from the distance travelled during the measuring time. The time (in minutes) is the distance travelled (in cm) multiplied by the preset speed (in min/cm).
