Product overview

The ERICHSEN 416 Through-Dry Tester consists of a sample table, a stand that guides the vertical load, and a drop weight. The drop weight totals 1500 g and is made up of weights, a test punch and a ball joint, which connects the test head. A rubber disc of 50 IRHD hardness to ISO 48 is bonded to the supplied test head so that the load is spread evenly over the sample.

The instrument is easy to operate and gives results that are very easy to read – a great help for R&D and quality control.

Applications

The ERICHSEN 416 is mainly used in R&D and quality control in the paint and varnish industries.

Test principle

Once the coating has reached the specified drying time, a defined force is applied to its surface; whether the surface then changes shows whether the coating is fully dry.

A typical test runs as follows:

Test to ISO 9117 and EN 29117.

u  Level the instrument with the supplied spirit level.

u  Wrap the test head in one of the supplied disposable nylon mesh pieces and hold it in place with the supplied rubber O-ring.

u  For R&D, samples can be tested at intervals; for quality control, test once the specified drying time has been reached.

u  At the test time, place the flat sample under the test head.

u  Lower the drop weight so the load acts directly on the coating surface. After 10 seconds, turn the test head through 90°, and lift it 2 seconds later.

u  Evaluation: if no mark can be seen on the surface, the coating is through-dry; otherwise it is not fully dry and must be tested again later.
