ERICHSEN Drying Time Recorder (Germany)

Product overview

The ERICHSEN 504 Drying Time Recorder is a rectangular metal housing whose top panel takes six glass strips (300 mm long × 25 mm wide), so the drying time of six coatings can be tested at once. Above the panel is a moving carriage carrying six test needles. Three test periods are available (6, 12 and 24 hours – the time taken to complete one test run).

Applications

The ERICHSEN 504 is mainly used in R&D and quality control in the paint and varnish industries.

Test principle

The 504 relies on the fact that a coating at different stages of drying resists the scribing needle differently. The needle moves across the coating at a fixed speed, and the trace it leaves varies with the degree of drying. From the run time and the character of the trace, the different drying stages can be defined.

The traces correspond to these stages of drying:

(Move the needle carriage back by hand to a clear transition point to read the time at which the change happened.)

v  No trace – the coating flows together behind the needle

v  Continuous trace – the coating no longer flows

v  Diamond-shaped trace – start of surface drying

v  Continuous trace on the surface – start of through-drying

v  Interrupted trace – start of tack-free stage

v  No trace – fully dry
